THE DOVETAIL JOINT
Nothing definite is known as to the origin of dovetailing, but a quaint and pleasing little story which is well worth repeating runs as follows: A farmer had called in the local "joyner" to do sundry repairs at the homestead. One day, whilst enjoying a humble meal, he sat watching some doves as they hopped about the yard. Struck by the movement of their wedge-shaped tails, it occurred to him to joint his timber by the interlocking method; hence we have dovetails.

Through Dovetailing.—One of the simplest forms of the dovetail joint is shown in Fig. 267, where two pieces[Pg 133] of timber are joined by the method known as "through" dovetailing. This method is used in everyday practice for joining the corners of frames,bracket trusses, and a hundred and one other articles.
Figs. 268 and 269 show the method of through dovetailing as applied to the making of boxes, plinths, and general carcase work; it is used in positions where no objection can be taken to the end grain showing on each side of the finished work. In the case of plinths and furniture cornices the foundation frame is made of yellow pine or other cheap wood, and the more expensive and rare timbers are glued and mitred around in various thicknesses and shapes, thus saving the more costly material and strengthening the construction by the method known as laminating. In many cases all that is necessary is to veneer the face sides, thus covering and hiding any unsightliness.

t-square


T-Square
The grey T-Square looks like the letter T. Notice that the top of the t-square is horizontal and the long part is vertical. In order to use the t-square correctly you need to tape your paper to a drawing board, making sure that the edges of the paper are paralel to the edges of the drawing board. Then, by sliding the t-square along the side of the drawing board you can draw parallel or perpendicular lines.

THE DRAWING BOARD.
A Drawing Board should be of soft pine and free from knots, so that it will easily receive the pins or tacks used to fasten down the paper. Its surface should be flat and level, or a little rounding, so that the paper shall lie close to its surface, which is one of the first requisites requisites in making a good drawing. Its edges should be straight and at a right angle one to the other, and the ends of the battens B B in Figure 1[18]should fall a little short of the edge A of the board, so that if the latter shrinks they will not protrude. The size of the board of course depends upon the size of the paper, hence it is best to obtain a board as small as will answer for the size of paper it is intended to use. The student will find it most convenient as well as cheapest to learn on small drawings rather than large ones, since they take less time to make, and cost less for paper; and although they require more skill to make, yet are preferable for the beginner, because he does not require to reach so far over the board, and furthermore, they teach him more quickly and effectively. He who can make a fair drawing having short lines and small curves can make a better one if it has large curves, etc., because it is easier to draw a large than a very small circle or curve. It is unnecessary to enter into a description of the various kinds of drawing boards in use, because if the student purchases one he will be duly informed of the kinds and their special features, while if he intends to make one the sketch in Figure will give him all the information he requires, save that, as before noted, the wood must be soft pine, well seasoned and free from knots, while the battens B should be dovetailed in and the face of the board trued after they are glued and driven in. To true the edges square, it is best to make the two longest edges parallel and straight, and then the ends may be squared from those long edges.

curves

CURVES.
To draw curves that are not formed of arcs or parts of circles, templates called curves are provided. They are made in wood and in hard rubber, the latter being most durable; their uses are so obvious as to require no explanation. It may be remarked, however, that the use of curves gives excellent practice, because they must be adjusted very accurately to produce good results, and the drawing pen must be held in the [22] same vertical plane, or the curve drawn will not be true in its outline.

triangular scale

a triangular scale, having upon it six different divisions of the inch. These are made in different patterns, having either decimal divisions or the vulgar fractions. Being made of steel, and nickel-plated, they are proof against the moisture of the fingers, and are not subject to the variation of the wooden scale.

set square

A set square or triangle (American English) is an object used in engineering and technical drawing, with the aim of providing a straightedge at a right angle or other particular planar angle to a baseline.
The most simple form of set square is a triangular piece of transparent plastic (or formerly of polished wood) with the centre removed. More commonly the set square combines this with a ruler and a half circle protractor, like on the picture. The outer edges are typically bevelled. These set squares come in two usual forms, both right triangles: one with 90-45-45 degree angles, the other with 30-60-90 degree angles. They are often purchased in packs with protractors and compasses.
Less commonly found is the adjustable set square. Here, the body of the object is cut in half and rejoined with a hinge marked with angles. Adjustment to the marked angle will produce any desired angle up to a maximum of 180°.

The machines commonly used to perform material removal operations are known as machine tools. The principle of a machine tool is to generate required surface by providing requisite motion between the cutting tool and the workpiece. The most commonly used machine tool applications are turning, milling, shaping, drilling, grinding etc. Thus, the basic purpose and principle of machine tools are:
To provide the relative motion between the cutting tool and the workpiece.
To provide the stiffness required for the cutting operation.
To control the vibrations caused during cutting.
As a source of power for the cutting operation.
To facilitate accuracy and surface finish.
Etc.
In Conventional Machine Tools:
The basic structure of a machine tool consists of base and tower arrangement. Here, depending on the machining process, the tool is fixed on the tower and the workpiece is held on the base or vice-versa.
The relative motion is achieved by movements parallel to the three spatial axes. This is achieved by means of linear guideways and bearings, axial movements along the screws, rack and pinion arrangements etc.
The machine is built of heavy steel and iron parts. The base of the machine usually is of cast iron. The structure is fixed over a concrete base. This arrangement is instrumental in stiffness and vibration control. The tool holding devices, joints and links also control vibration.
The power is generally transmitted by systems comprising of gears, axles, screws etc.
The accuracy and surface finish are dependent on the the accuracy of relative motion, stiffness and vibration control.

This is sometimes called a coverall. In American English, it is nearly always referred to as "coveralls". It is a one-piece garment with full-length sleeves and legs like a jumpsuit, but usually less tight-fitting. Its main feature is that it has no gap between jacket and trousers or between lapels, and no loose jacket tails. It often has a long thin pocket down the outside of the right thigh to hold long tools. It usually has a front fastening extending the whole length of the front of the body up to the throat, with no lapels. It may be fastened with buttons, a zipper, velcro, or snap fasteners. Boilersuits with an attached hood are available. The word "boilersuit" may also refer to disposable garments such as Dupont's Tyvek suits.
Boilersuits are so called because they were first worn by men maintaining coal-fired boilers. In order to check for steam leaks or to clean accumulated soot from inside the firebox of a steam locomotive, it is necessary for someone to climb inside, through the firehole (where the coal is shovelled in). A one-piece suit avoids the potential problem of loosened soot entering the lower half of the cleaner's clothing through the gap in the middle. As the firehole opening is only just large enough for a fit individual to negotiate, a one-piece suit also avoids the problem of the waistband snagging on the firehole as the person bends to wriggle through.
Uses of boilersuits
Coveralls are most often worn as protective clothing over "street" clothes at work. They are sometimes also worn directly over shirt and underclothes.
Coveralls called student overalls are used by university students in some Scandinavian countries as a sort of party-uniform, with insignia on the back and color varying with program and university. It is also practice to customize the coverall in a variety of ways, including adding a large number of patches, and exchanging parts of the suit with other students.

Ketam merupakan alat yang digunakan untuk melicinkan kayu. Papan atau mengecilkannya kepada ukuran yang diperlukan dalam pertukangan tradisional Melayu.
Mata ketam diperbuat daripada logam dan bahagian-bahagian lain diperbuat daripada kayu. Ia mempunyai pemegang kanan dan kiri untuk memudahkan pengguna menjalankan proses pengetaman kayu. Namun pada masa sekarang, keseluruhan ketam diperbuat daripada logam dan banyak yang menggunakan tenaga elektrik.
Ketam mempunyai saiz yang pelbagai, di mana ketam panjang digunakan sebagai ketam penyudah, terutamanya untuk melicinkan dan meratakan permukaan kayu. Ketam jantan akan menghasilkan tahi ketam atau tatal yang tebal, tetapi ketam betina sebaliknya. Ketam jantan juga sesuai dijadikan alat pemula kerja dan ketam betina sebagai alat penyudah kerja. Ketam ada pelbagai-bagai jenis iaitu ketam panjang, ketam lidah betina, ketam lidah jantan, ketam halus besi dan ketam golek.
